I used to think I was overly judgmental. Well, it turns out I absolutely am. Eventually I realized those judgments have always been in service of trying to understand people. I’m endlessly fascinated by the who, what and why? who we are, what shapes us and why we do the things we do.
Twenty years producing commercialS and print campaigns (kevincullen.net) informs my sense of what’s possible, whether recognizing what’s already in front of me or creating something entirely new.
For me, it begins with context, sitting with someone, connecting on a human level, and understanding something about the person I’m photographing.
Sometimes that understanding comes from the images we’re drawn to or the music we listen to. We’ve all come across an image that made us stop or heard a song that made us feel something without really knowing why. Maybe something about it feels familiar. Maybe we recognize something about ourselves in it. Maybe we simply find it beautiful. Either way, for a moment, we just... feel.
That, for me, is where the conversation begins...
